Why take this course?

🎓 Course Title: Acoustics 201: Loudspeaker Measurement

Course Headline:

Unlock the Secrets of Speaker Measurements and Crossover Design with Expert Instructor Marius Tanasescu

Course Description:

Measure Frequency Response Like a Pro 🔊

Learn how to accurately measure the frequency response of speaker drivers, loudspeakers, or entire sound systems without the need for an anechoic chamber. Master different measuring techniques and harness intuitive software to obtain an anechoic response right in your own living room. This valuable skill allows you to set up your audio system based on measured data or to design custom crossovers for your DIY loudspeaker projects.

Electrical Engineering Essentials 🕖

Dive into the world of electrical engineering with ease! You'll learn how to measure impedance and generate impedance plots, a critical aspect of any sound system. Additionally, discover how to measure capacitors, inductors, resistors, and even determine the Thiele/Small parameters for unknown speaker drivers.

Explore Crossover Design 🛠️

Although this course doesn't cover crossover design from scratch, it provides you with all the necessary tools to create Frequency Response Density (FRD) and Z-plane Magnitude Array (ZMA) files. These files are essential for designing crossovers using specialized software applications. In the near future, a comprehensive course on crossover design will be available, guiding you through every step.

Required Equipment 🛍️

  • A measurement microphone (e.g., miniDSP UMIK-1)
  • A device for measuring impedance (e.g., Dayton Audio DATS v2/v3)

You will receive a detailed list of equipment with alternatives and cheaper options, as well as accessories to enhance your measurement experience.

Software & Tools 💻

We'll be using Room EQ Wizard (REW), a robust yet user-friendly software for all acoustic measurements. This free tool is an excellent alternative to expensive applications and comes with an additional Excel spreadsheet designed by the instructor to cover its sole shortcoming, making it a comprehensive package for your measurement needs.

Course Updates:

Nov 2018 Update:

English subtitles have been added to the course for better understanding and learning experience.

June 2019 Update:

A measurement error for the 3-way speaker was corrected, and additional information was added to that section to enhance clarity.

Jan 2020 Update:

The equipment list has been updated to reflect the latest models and accessories you'll need for precise measurements.
